DXi FM synthesizer App Comentários

DXI

Much better than you would think to look at it

Not a DX7, but close enough.

This app is really good for anyone wanting to add basic FM sounds to their mix. It has a few DX algorithms that allow you to tweak and alter the preset sounds to get some really strange effects. And it's got those thumping DX synth basses for hip-hop and EDM. The sound isn't as smooth and polished as you would get from a real DX, never mind Native Instruments FM8 or the Synclavier V. It reminds me more of the CZ1 from Casio or the Volca FM from Korg. Still, other than Casio's iCZ, this is the best FM/ PD synth app out there.

Overall the best 4 Operator FM synth for iOS

Don't get me wrong, I still like FM4. However, DXi would get a fifth star if it had an LFO separate form the Mod Wheel and detuning features. Pitch envelopes would be nice too. While the FM4 has the advantage of LFOs, different sound engines, more flexible settings, and an arpeggiator, it suffers from being abandoned. DXi has the advantage of being more up-to-date, being universal, it sounds just as good, option to turn off anti-aliasing, a true sequencer, better MIDI (I assume), full control of pitch in ratio or fixed mode, more pleasing interface, etc.

Hands down the easiest FM synth on iOS

I'm really glad the developer keeps providing support to this little jewel of a synth. Comparing this app with it's closer adversaries (FM4, TX7, iYM2151) DXi still wins. I'll tell you why: DXi has the easiest way to fiddle with FM parameters via the ADSR screen. Also, DXi has a recorder, MIDI capable, ACP and Audiobus ready, making it easy to integrate to your sonic arsenal. I'm still hoping for the capability of opening SYX files from old FM synths like the 4-OP Yamaha TX81Z. That would make this app the king FM synth to have.

Good.

I like this synth. Many great, unique sounds. Works well with Cubasis. Great bells and pads.

Love it! How about Audiobus Effects support?

DX7 owner & guitar player here; I love this app! First: I appreciate not having to get out of my chair to play the DX7. Second: I think I could learn more about FM synthesis from this app than I ever could from standing at the DX7. Lastly, I wonder if you'd consider adding Audiobus Effects support? I'd love to play my guitar through my DXi … thanks again.

Great start, but needs more keyboard features

This does work with a midi controller, but does not work with a sustain pedal. I had a DX100 years ago with four operators, and had a lot of fun programming it. This is a great start, but the keyboard could use some improvement, like the ability to make the keys bigger, and also a mono mode for the lead presets. Add that, and a midi event editor, and I will give it five stars. As a final note, there should be an option to toggle the slide function on the keyboard as it makes it next to impossible to do ascending glissando rolls. I would also like to point out that this is a limited version that does not include poly/ mono switch, no pitch bend range, no portamento, no speed control for the LFO filter wave forms, which are also incomplete, as there is no sample & hold or sample & hold x8. Although there is a white noise filter. This is not a true DX7 emulation, or it would have 6 operators instead of 4. There should also be 12 algorithms, but there appears to be only about 6. The ADSR on each operator should also have five points instead of four, although they do work well. One star off my earlier rating until an update comes out that includes the missing features. That being said, it's still not a bad app for free.

A great app at an unreal price for what your getting...

I primarily am a singer/songwriter/guitarist but have played many other instruments as well (bass, started on drums in 6th grade band and still play, etc.). Keys have always fascinated me but aside from adding crochet piano chords and pads on demos I really didn't get into them. Over the last 5 years I have been reading up, playing more and generally digging the various synths, electric pianos and organs I have been lucky to play. The iPad opened serious doors though because I could now try several different synths, etc. without buying more sound modules, electric pianos, controllers or VST's. My Novation controller into my interface and boom, I can enjoy tons of different sounds. I have went pretty crazy with the app purchases but with so many cool ones out there (and yes there is lots of crap too) I have a hard time not trying them when they go for a cup of coffee or less. DXi here is a great example of high quality sounds available for penny's on the dollars that they're worth. DXi has such a streamlined and easy to program interface that getting sounds and experimenting happens very quickly. The sequencer is a great touch as well as the .wav recorder. That recorder is great for skipping Audiobus and making a great loop or tone inside the app, recording it with the DXi recorder, export for more editing and mangling in an editor or DAW and then bring it to the project your working on or begin a new one with the idea as a great jumping off point. I can see whole songs getting their genesis from some experimenting with this app, the vibe and sounds are that good... Although most reviews are positive, I feel DXi is underated or at least a hidden gem. This app belongs in any iPad music makers toolbox regardless of the genre they lean to. Great work by the dev and it shows he cares by the steady updates over the course of a few years.

How to Load extra sound

Is there a way to load extra sounds voice, like soft leaf brass, touch trumpet and organ???

Nice Sounding App

Works Great ..opens in other apps well and sounds great in garageband and other daw apps ..Cool little step sequencer , and tape recorder to capture ideas on the fly . Decent presets to jump off of and create your own Dx type sounds

Best way to learn to use fm

This is the synth Yamaha should have released first! An awesome fm synth interface! Wow ! I love how it shows you what the operators are doing and how fast or slow they are moving and how the envelopes affect the modulation! Awesome interface ! Bravo! Peace christo

Authentic DX sound

Sounds much more like a real Yamaha DX than its rival FM4. And far easier to program than a real one too!

Amazingly simple yet deep

Finally came to understand how FM synthesis works by playing with this app's ASDR envelopes. That simple an app. But all the presets sound awesome too. And the MIDI implementation is perfect for me and my iconnect midi+4

Producer

Excellent. Thank you for all your efforts in producing such a fine recreation of the FM sound. Very user friendly, and great sounds.

great FM / DX sound!

Holy cow, this is the one to get. Simple and straightforward, amazing classic sounds, .. Worth every iCent ;)

Quick and smooth

If you ever wqnted a crystal-clear synth sound with quick response this is a great app. FM synthesis can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it you can get all kinds of liquid-smooth gradients and overtones. Really good with virtual MIDI, it's my go-to app when I need a quick bass line or key stab.

Exceptional all the way round!!

If you like the sounds that one can make with this form of FM synthesis and you use iOS for any audio activities you need this app. I've had it since it was released and it's creator continually updates this app for each iOS release as well as performance enhancements. Seriously good app and my respect to Takahashi-San!!

DXi synth

I highly recommend this app. Great for playing songs from the album Back In The High Life by Steve Winwood.

Great app!

Please add 6-operator/32 algorithm support!

Really good!

Sounds are rich, deep, resonant and full. Rivals hardware easily. If your looking for a synth with some depth, here it is.

Whoa

Theres nothing I like more than quirky weird synths. And out of every synth app I've gotten on my iPad, this is by far my favorite. I can (and have) spent hours playing with it, due to its depth and flexibility. Thank you developers, DXi is amazing.

Very good

This is a really good app with lots of features, and unlike a lot of apps out right now, it actual works!

Must have

If you are a iso music maker this is a no brainier. great app

Great app

Fixed the iPhone 5 support? Makes an awesome app even better!

Looks cool but....

It crashes immediately after touching the keyboard. I hope a fix comes soon.

Crashes on IPad 4 too

Using a IPad 4. Worked perfectly until the update. Opens up but as soon as you press a key, it crashes.

If you don't know what FM synthesis is...

...then all you need to know is you're an idiot if you don't buy this.

VERY YES!!!

This is an outstanding app! I am a hard-core sound designer and this thing has a ton of possibilities!

nice.

but please expand the sequencer!! it's a shame to not be able to program this thing properly in iOS.

Awesome!

Useable, functional, virtual midi, background audio, stellar sound--no brainier. Get it!

Great FM synth app!

I just sold my dx7 and have been missing it. :( and while this app couldn't replace it, it has been really handy in its abscence. The only thing more I could ask for would be for more control over the LFO. I love the sound when the mod wheel is just a little up but I could sure use some control over wave shape, speed, and depth to get some really dynamic FM patches.

Messes with my iPhone

The last two times I used this app, the display zoomed in by itself, and even when I closed the app, the display would not go back to normal without a hard reset. I'm afraid there might be a virus (don't take my word for it, I don't know for sure!)

Cool

I did not like this synth at first. However, I tried it again after a while last night after setting up rtpmidi and using core midi and a keyboard midi controller to control this synth. WOW, I was able to make some sweet bass! I tried to get the same sounds in-app but I just couldn't. My midi keyboard will allow me to go four octaves lower than the in app keyboard does and that has made all the difference for me. I would suggest a future update to increase the range of the in-app keyboard. I see this synth supports midi CC for cutoff and resonance, but it would be cool if maybe it were possible to midi-learn other parameters. (it might be interesting to say, use a sequencer to change waveforms or to LFO the ratio, etc., this is my first real experience with FM so I don't know).

Totally changed my mobile sound...

Recently I went completely mobile in my production, both to say that I did and also because the workflow in BeatMaker2 is so intuative (spelling error and pun intended). The sampler synth in BeatMaker 2 is incredibly lacking, with amateurish sounding melodies littering my projects. Before I tried mobile synthesizers, I found myself creating melodies in Ableton or Reason then exporting them as WAVs to BM2. I wanted a centralized production environment, trying many mobile synths on the App Store, including Addictive Synth, Animoog, and other classics. While they are good pieces of software, none stack up against DXi for my own sound. The ease of use when manipulating patches is unmatched. Different algorithms to test out on your synths? This app is like Ableton's Operator plugin, but mobile! With the included AudioCopy tool, I love and now rely on this software. However, all I ask: • Be able to hold/tie/slur/accent notes in the sequencer. • Be able to save sequencer arrangements. • Be able to export sequencer arrangements as MIDI/audio. While I am aware that you are able to hit "record" then "play" on the sequencer (as I have been doing), this would be much cleaner. These are minor requests that only pertain to assisting my own workflow. This synth is a must-have for the mobile producer. Squelching bass, buzzing leads, beautiful pads, and evolving textures... All possible with this $2 synth. I would've paid $20 with a fully fledged sequencer part (see my list above). 5/5.

My bad

While playing the DXi, the pages on my iPad flip, making it impossible or at least difficult to play live. Please look into this. Otherwise, it's a decent synth for the price. OK, I was wrong. I had my multitasking switch on. Problem solved.

Great FM Synth!

This is a crystal clear sounding 4 operator FM synth, a baby brother to the classic 6 operator Yamaha DX-7 synth. These FM synths have a distinct sound, which is very different than the typical subtractive or sample-based synth. The DXi implementation sounds great and the UI is great, especially on the iPad. The algorithm/operator editor is cool, swiping through the algorithms and then touching an operator to configure it. But to me the most fantastic part is the ADSR envelope editor, which, on iPad, highlights each stage over time as a note is played...on the one hand, it's completely obvious, but I've seen a lot of synths and never encountered it before. If Mr. Mizuhiki came up with this, he deserves some kind of prize, and hopefully he didn't patent it!

Nice lil DX

Big sound. Easy to program.

Great little synth

FM synthesis is a powerful tool which allows for the creation of lush, harmonically rich sounds with a very small set of oscillators. Unfortunately, compared with additive or subtractive synthesis, it's relatively impenetrable - a problem that was made much worse by the menu diving GUI in the Yamaha DX series synths. This app does a great job of creating a GUI that clearly explains the structure of the sound and what the parameters do, making FM synthesis fun for the first time I've ever experienced. There are a bunch of good little synths for the iPad, and a lot more bad ones, but this is one of the best available. To the dev, please make a pro version of this synth with midi input, and over sampling so the higher harmonics don't alias back down. I would buy it all over again.

Not there yet

This is promising app which emulates a 4-operator (aka four oscillator, but in FM you usually use at least one oscillator as a modulator) FM synthesizer like the DX-100 or TX-81Z. The sound is nice and it has a nice set of Yamaha-style algorithms (i.e. ways of wiring up your carrier and modulator oscillators), and a variety of waveforms (i.e. more than must sine waves) give you additional flexibility. Effects include a basic delay/chorus and fixed lowpass filter which can be used to cut some FM grunge for soft sounds. Audio cut and paste and a simple step sequencer are also nice. Unfortunately, the app is just not very usable because the sound keeps dropping out! Please keep working on it, because I would love to have a nice FM synth on the iPad!!

Don't judge a book by its cover!!!!

This synth sounds amazing!!!!! There's something about the sound that keeps its vintage identity totally intact while still perfectly inspiring new ideas and fitting in with any modern sound you're looking at creating!!!!!! Thanks for this synth!!!!! Please keep on developing great instruments!!!!!!

Comes alive when you start working with it.

Don't waste your precious time exploring presets - explore the capabilities of the synth instead: It's magical. BUT... It would *greatly* benefit by better midi support (imagine this with virtual midi and midi learn capabilities!!!) Also, less critical, but a couple more panels of FX would take this to a whole new level.

AMAZING

Love. This. App.

Really fun, very powerful

Sounds just like the old days!

Basic DX synth

Does the job well. Needs Synthstation support and more sounds and downloadable sound libraries. Then 5 Stars.

99 Voices baby!

Love the Sound of this synth and the extra voices in the latest update. 5 Star app all day. A Must have in your synth arsenal. Don't Sleep. Thank You for this excellent app!

The sounds of the 80s

I was 16 and saw my first DX7. That was the synth that got me hooked. This is a great homage to those days of synthesizers. Faithfully replicated in virtual form, and sounds quite good. A lots changed since those days but the classic sounds this generates are a very welcome addition to the iOS synth market. Any synth lover should appreciate this. It's a no brainer, just click buy.

My old Yammy DX-11revisited

This reminds me of my old Yamaha DX-11, but for a much better price. Very nice!

FM made easy ....

Good sounding , easy to use . can run in lofi mode for that extra authentic late 80's coldness ;) 4 out of five .... 1 more star for : making the seq section not a pop out , but maybe a page instead ie; instead of seeing env section ? Update the filter with a more robust sound ? Allow user to specify what the mod wheel does !

Really nice FM synth!

Nice sound, fun to program. A few more sample patches would be nice, but I have already programmed about 10 more in less than an hour. Anyone looking for a nice sounding FM synth will be pleased.
